On the Road to Wellness: I Can Finally Say that I am Feeling Better and Acupuncture Helped!
Perhaps you read my recent post, Fitness Pros Get Tired Too, about my struggles with just plain exhaustion and adrenal fatigue. Suffice it to say that after moving to Manhattan and dealing with aging parents, hubby’s depression, hormonal imbalances, and the concurrent weight gain and irritability that resulted, I was a hot mess – fat, tired, bloated, depressed, and pissy as hell. Seriously, I am amazed that I pulled it together for my clients’ sessions (which of course I did, being the pro that I am).
It’s been about a month, and after making a few changes I am feeling much better. In my next posts I will focus on what specific things I have added that have really helped me get my energy back.
I love acupuncture. There were times at Parrot Cay where I would have been in such worse pain were it not for acupuncture. Falling on my unstable SI joint, breaking my finger and injuring my ulnar nerve in a boat accident, and shingles on my sciatic nerve (yes, you read that right; if karma’s true, then I was a massive pain in someone’s a** in a previous life) would have all been much worse without the care I received from Hashi, Nobue, and then Yuki.
After hearing lots of the teachers at Real Pilates discussing going to City Acupuncture and reading their fab Yelp reviews, I decided to go. Hubby was all in favor, and that clinched it. They are right down the street from me at Fulton & Nassau, are open seven days a week, and treatments can cost as little as $35 with a package of five.
The treatment area is communal. The huge, high-ceilinged space is divided by screens and contains about 15 treatment tables. Lights are dimmed, there is meditation music on an ipod, and there are baskets underneath the table for your stuff. I wear comfy clothes so they can roll up pant legs and shirt arms, or even do a belly button point. At first I had a few different people, including Terri and Bob, who were all good; but now that I go at the same time every week, I have the same person, Craig Wong – young, mellow, kind, and really good at what he does.
He looks at my tongue, checks my pulse, asks me a few questions about my sleep, body temperature, and general state of being, and then places the needles. Since I tend to get cold, he puts a light foil emergency blanket over me so as to not disturb the needles (if it’s really cold he turns on the electric blanket under me as well), and then lets me rest until I need to leave. There is nothing better than resting with acupuncture needles for an hour or more on a Sunday. Really.
Anyway, the acupuncture has helped me sleep better, regulate my body temperature, and make better food choices. Between the acupuncture and the Ortho Molecular Adapten-All supplement I started taking, I am sleeping better.
